According To The Supreme Court, The Trial In The RG Kar Rape-Murder Case Is Expected To Conclude In One Month.

The court stated that 43 witnesses’ statements have been recorded and that the trial is being held daily in the Special CBI Court in Sealdah from Monday through Thursday. 81 witnesses in all will be questioned by the prosecution. These findings were noted in the ruling made in the Suo Motu case that took over the rape-murder case by a bench that included Justice Sanjay Kumar and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.

Tushar Mehta, the CBI’s Solicitor General, said the bench that a chargesheet had been filed and that the matter pertaining to financial irregularities in the RG Kar hospital had been looked into separately. Since the accused are public employees, the State Government’s approval for prosecution in that matter is still pending, the SG continued. In order to implicate individuals who were allegedly involved in covering up the crime, the victim’s parents, represented by advocate Vrinda Grover, said that they hope the CBI will file a supplemental chargesheet in the rape-murder case.

The National Task Force, which was established to make suggestions to improve the security protection for medical professionals, has turned in its findings, the Court added. It requested replies to the NTF recommendations from the States and Union Territories. The deadline for the NTF’s final report is 12 weeks from today. On March 17, the Court will take up the case again. The parties are free to bring up the issue if the trial is delayed.

In accordance with the relief already given by the Supreme Court, the Court further requested that the AIIMS take into account a petition made by a few doctors that the time of their protest should not be regarded as a period of abstention from duty. On August 9, the body of the post-graduate trainee physician was discovered in the seminar room of the R.G. Kar Hospital. In this regard, a civic volunteer was taken into custody by the Kolkata Police the following day. After voicing dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Central Bureau of probe (CBI) to take over the probe on August 13.The Supreme Court heard a suo motu lawsuit on the incident on August 19. Sanjay Roy, who was detained by the Kolkata police, was charged by the CBI in October.
